We drove by a couple who suffered a flat tire with their 2×2 car. We took the 864 but almost regretted it… Especially the second part after visiting Dettifoss and Selfoss and heading further north, the road gets rough with bad gravel (big rocks, big holes). When you want to visit Selfoss and Dettifoss waterfalls from the Lake Myvatn area, you will have to make a choice which road you will take: River view northwards with Selfoss behind my back 862 vs. By water flow, Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall of Europe! Dettifoss is about 45 meters high and app. The southernmost located waterfall (out of four) is Dettifoss, with about 10 meters height. We also met a ranger along the way who walked around to keep an eye on the visitors. Flying with a drone is prohibited at Dettifoss and Selfoss. Please follow the marked footpaths and avoid disturbing the flora and fauna when walking around in this special area. These waterfalls belong to a protected area since 1996 to preserve the history, landscape, flora and fauna of the area. Jökulsárgljúfur (west side) used to have the status of being a National Park on itself between 19. Jökulsárgljúfur is nowadays part of Vatnajökull National Park, one out of three NP’s on Iceland. Its depth come close to or exceeds 100m in many places. Jökulsárgljúfur is the largest and possibly the most spectacular canyon of Iceland.
